Tonight, in this origin-story series predating the familiar costumed heroes and villains of Gotham City, Gotham finally presents a masked character: The Mask. But don’t expect Jim Carrey, or any green-hued nonsense: This is an early iteration of DC Comics’ Black Mask.

I can imagine the tabloid headline now: “Headless Horseman Found in Topless Bar.” Actually, that’s not quite an accurate assessment of tonight’s plot – but it does involve a seductive demon sent to cause trouble by seducing victims, in bars and elsewhere. Can you say succubus, boys and girls? And if you can, should you?

JANE THE VIRGIN

CW, 9:00 p.m. ET

In tonight’s episode, Jane (Gina Rodriguez) defies maternal advice and moves in with her fiancé (Brett Dier). But I wouldn’t expect that to last for long, because it removes too many other romantic, and especially comedic, possibilities.

CASTLE

ABC, 10:00 p.m. ET

The long-awaited wedding on this show will have to wait until next week – but this week, Castle (Nathan Fillion) imagines what his life would be like had he never met Beckett (Stana Katic). For one thing, he’d never be able to act in TV’s latest It’s a Wonderful Life ripoff.

THE BLACKLIST

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

MIDSEASON FINALE: Tonight’s episode, in which Alan Alda returns as Red’s nemesis Fitch, is the final Blacklist of 2014. But don’t worry – it’ll return soon enough in 2015, after NBC’s telecast of the Super Bowl.
