2012 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYOFFS

Various Networks, 1:00 p.m. ET

In another busy day of postseason baseball, first up is Game 3 of the St. Louis Cardinals vs. Washington Nationals playoff, with the series tied at 1 apiece. That game will be televised by the MLB Network at 1 p.m. ET. Then, at 4 p.m. ET on TBS, the Cincinnati Reds face the San Francisco Giants in game 4 of their series, with the Reds leading 2-1. TBS also has Game 3 of the New York Yankees-Baltimore Orioles series, tied at 1 apiece, starting at 7:30 p.m. ET. And thanks to the Oakland Athletics’ do-or-die Tuesday night win against the Detroit Tigers, Game 4 of that series will be played at 9:30 p.m. ET, televised by TNT. The Tigers have a 2-1 edge in that series.

THE MIDDLE

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Remember the scene in Annie Hall when Woody Allen and Diane Keaton are panicking in the kitchen because of some runaway lobsters? Well, tonight’s episode has the Heck family in the same household location, similarly freaked out – by Brick’s new pet, a decidedly non-cuddly bunny rabbit.

THE HAUNTING

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 1963 movie, with restrained but very effective special effects, is one of the best haunted-house thrillers ever made. And even though it’s nearly 50 years old, it still works, and still delivers the chills. Julie Harris stars.

MODERN FAMILY

ABC, 9:00 p.m. ET

ABC is supporting its new series Nashville by preceding it with a one-hour Modern Family special, and the sitcom can use the extra air time. It’s a big day of firsts for characters on the show: It’s Haley’s first day at college, Lily’s first day at kindergarten, and Jay and Gloria’s first day at baby class.

ABC, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: A trio of talents makes this new ABC series worth sampling, and hoping it delivers on its initial premise and promise. Connie Britton plays a country music star whose trajectory is waning, Hayden Panettiere plays a younger singer whose star is rising, and, behind the scenes, T Bone Burnett – who guided the soundtracks for O Brother Where Art Thou? and Crazy Heart – oversees the music.
