THE X-FILES

The second episode of this new season (Season 11) of The X-Files features one of the characters from the show’s short-lived spinoff series, The Lone Gunmen. The character is Richard “Ringo” Langly, the actor is Dean Haglund, and the episode is called “This.” And what is “This” about? Basically, it’s about an alternate, artificially created universe where a person’s consciousness can be kept alive, indefinitely. It’s the same sci-fi plot device that already has been used on Netflix’s Black Mirror, and is about to be used on Amazon’s imminent Electric Dreams series. This 1982 biographical epic stars Ben Kingsley as Mahatma Gandhi, with Candice Bergen as Margaret Bourke-White and such eminent co-stars as Edward Fox and John Gielgud. The action begins about a century before the movie was released, when a young Gandhi had his own personal Rosa Parks-type moment on a South African train. After he was ejected from a first-class compartment for being Indian, Gandhi began a series of nonviolent protests – a protest that spread from unfair practices on South African transportation systems to a demand for human rights that was positively planetary, and planetarily positive.

Nova means new, but in TV terms, Nova is an old, old dog – but one that doesn’t need any new tricks. It began on PBS in 1974, and has logged 45 seasons of usually fascinating reports on scientific topics. Today, it launches a new year by taking a two-hour tour of black holes – a phenomenon that is not only frightening, and astounding, but – in photographs and artist renderings, absolutely gorgeous. Hi Dave: Read your review of Rubicon. I know AMC didn't pursue it. Read BBC4 picked up to air in 2011. Any chance you taped the episodes? If not, do you know anyone who did?
