BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

NBC, 1:00 p.m. ET

Yesterday, the AFC wild-card games were a study in contrasts. The Kansas City Chiefs-Houston Texans game was a blowout, with the Chiefs winning 30-0. The second game had the Pittsburgh Steelers dominating the Cincinnati Bengals in the first half, the Bengals coming back to take the lead in the final minute, and the Steelers to end up with the win, thanks to unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that put the Steelers within field goal range. The Chiefs won the first game with good plays, while the Bengals lost the second game with poor sportsmanship. How to characterize, in advance, today’s first game, with the Seattle Seahawks facing the Minnesota Vikings at Minnesota? Cold, that’s how. As in, feeling like 20 below zero playing conditions.

Fox, 4:30 p.m. ET

The second game of the day, between the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Redskins, will be warmer. Whether the game will be better, that’s up to the teams.

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Ricky Gervais is back as host for this year’s ceremony. Since it’s live, how far Gervais is willing to go with his caustic humor will depend, in part, upon the room. The more receptive to his barbs they are, the more cutting and funny he’s likely to be. Or, perhaps, it’s precisely the opposite: If they give him a frosty reception, he may respond by turning up the heat.

CBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

Just before the “winter hiatus,” Alicia (Julianna Margulies) and Eli (Alan Cumming) had a private drink and an even more private chat – one in which he admitted, after all these years, erasing that “I love you” phone message from Alicia’s phone without ever telling her about it. She threw him out of her apartment – but not out of her life, because they’re still on the campaign trail with Peter (Chris Noth). Expect tension – and even more revelations.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

There is, as usual, a lot going on in this week’s installment, including plans for a wedding, talk of a baby, and an application for a new job outside Downton – and that’s only part of it. Check local listings.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Emma Kenney, as high-schooler Debbie Gallagher, has been given more prominent bits of business the past few years, and she’s delivered strongly. That makes the news less than surprising that this year’s Season 6 includes a story line in which she’s quite central – and quite pregnant.
