JOHN MCCAIN MEMORIAL SERVICE

Various Networks, 10:00 a.m. ET

It’s been an emotional week, and a memorable one, watching the various televised funerals, services, and other tributes to John McCain and Aretha Franklin. Today, there’s another service for John McCain, and the mourners in attendance – such as daughter Meghan McCain, whose tribute to her father, delivered just as I typed this, was as strong as it was tearful – are as noteworthy as those who are notable by their absence.

 
  
 
 
MISSION GALAPAGOS

BBC America, 9:00 p.m. ET

This new documentary series, in last week’s initial outing, left me spellbound. I couldn’t believe what I had seen – and in addition to the marvels of life found at the rim of a Galapagos Island volcano, or in the sea deep, deep beneath the island chain, there was the marvel of seeing young scientists traversing these most remote of areas with such commitment and enthusiasm. Watch for all of that, and more, in tonight’s second installment, “Secrets of the Deep.”

 
  
 
 
THE 2000S: "THE PLATINUM AGE OF TELEVISION"

CNN, 11:00 p.m. ET

Yes, it’s a repeat. Yes, I’m in it, a little. And yes, its title is taken from my latest book. But on this particular Labor Day weekend night, CNN is repeating not only the opening, two-hour TV installment of The 2000s, but following it, immediately (at 1 a.m. ET), with the opening, two-hour TV installment of The Nineties. And after that, at 3 a.m. ET, it’s also showing the opening, two-hour installment of The Eighties. Record them all – and yes, I’m in them, too. I’ve been with this CNN documentary series, at least the installments on TV history, for decades.
