BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Today and tonight, TCM is devoting its schedule to Marilyn Monroe. This makes room for plenty of her classics, including 1956’s Bus Stop at 6 p.m. ET and 1953’s Niagara at 10 p.m. ET. But the real treat, leading off prime time, is 1955’s The Seven Year Itch, co-starring Tom Ewell. He plays a Fifties-era Madison Avenue advertising genius – a prototype for Don Draper of Mad Men, only frumpier – and she plays an apartment neighbor upon whom he projects his romantic fantasies, especially while his wife is away. This is the movie where Monroe stands atop that subway grate in that billowing white dress – but it’s also the movie where Ewell, imagining a private visit with Monroe, envisions them as sophisticates, drinking champagne in evening clothes as he dazzles her by playing Rachmaninoff on the piano.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

MINISERIES CONCLUSION: In this final episode, photographer Joel Sartore takes his nature photography to a tighter focus than before – and spends a lot of time taking pictures of insects. For a full review, see David Hinckley’s All Along the Watchtower. Check local listings.

Discovery, 9:00 p.m. ET

MINISERIES PREMIERE: This eight-part Discovery miniseries is a scripted dramatic show – the first major such effort by this network, and an unqualified success. It stars Paul Bettany as Ted Kaczynski, and Sam Worthington as FBI profiler James Fitzgerald, who pursued the Unabomber for years. Not every scene is to be believed in this fact-based drama, but the drama itself is undeniable. For my full review today on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, tune in to the radio, or visit the Fresh Air website later this afternoon.

AXS TV, 10:00 p.m. ET

AXS is saluting Elvis this month, and this early salvo is his 1970 concert documentary. It’s an intimate, sweaty portrait that captures Elvis Presley making a well-designed, energetically performed comeback – and making his white jumpsuit an iconic fashion statement at the same time.
