BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

FLIX, 8:00 p.m. ET

Philip Seymour Hoffman won an Academy Award for his role as Truman Capote, the narcissistic author of the groundbreaking true crime novel, In Cold Blood, and brilliantly captured Capote's legendary egoism and his obsession with the Clutter family murders. Catherine Keener co-stars as Capote's childhood friend, Harper Lee.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

Karl Pilkington presents his views on capital punishment, and reveals how he would deal with a hostage situation. Karl, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant also discuss the Ten Commandments. Thou shall find it hysterical...

Bravo, 9:00 p.m. ET

George Clooney stars in this 2000 adventure, based on the same-name non-fiction book by Sebastian Junger. The film, which tells the story of the ill-fated crew of the Andrea Gail, depends on special effects for its dramatic, aquatic climax, but solid acting for everything else. The outstanding supporting cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Diane Lane, John C. Reilly, Cherry Jones and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Bravo repeats the film at 11:38 p.m. ET.

Animal Planet, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Whale Wars, one of Animal Planet's highest-rated shows, starts its fifth season tonight. The controversial reality series follows the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's ongoing struggle to end Japanese whaling using any means possible. At 8 p.m. ET, Animal Planet offers a special one-hour recap of Season 4.

Cinemax, 9:00 p.m. ET

This 2011 movie, half action thriller and half psychological character study, ends as abruptly as it begins, and with the same punctuating visual. But in between is an impressively, unusually involving drama about a teen girl raised in isolation to be a very effective offensive weapon. Saoirse Ronan stars in the title role, and the photography, especially in the remote winter lands, is stunning.

Great breakdown! Having well-written television like this makes evening downtime so much more engaging. When I'm taking a break between episodes or just relaxing after a long day of screen time, I usually unwind for a bit with a few casual rounds on [chicken road](https://chickenroad.gr.com/) before starting the next season. Really appreciate the thoughtful recommendations on this site!
