TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Ernst Lubitsch directed this witty Jack Benny comedy, in which he and Carole Lombard star as married actors who use their thespian talents to aid the Polish underground against the Nazis. One noteworthy thing about this film is that it was made in 1942, when the real WWII was in full force. Another is that this movie was remade in 1983, starring Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft.

 
  
 
 
DOCTOR WHO

BBC America, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Part 1 of 2. “Dark Water” is the title of this two-part season finale, which, based on the promos, promises to shed some light upon the origins, and true motives of the “mystery girl” known as Clara (Jenna Coleman), the current companion of the Doctor (Peter Capaldi). Could Clara, literally as well as figuratively, hold the key to the Doctor’s fate?

David Bianculli has been a TV critic since 1975, including a 14-year stint at the New York Daily News, and sees no reason to stop now. Currently, he's TV critic for NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and is an occasional substitute host for that show. He's also an author and teaches TV and film history at New Jersey's Rowan University. His 2009 Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour', has been purchased for film rights.
