1977: 'The Richard Pryor Show' Debuts on NBC
September 13, 2019  | By TV WW

Today in 1977, NBC introduced the short-lived comedy series, The Richard Pryor Show. Pryor was a successful stand-up comedian whose appearances in the films Silver Streak and Greased Lightning had moved him into the mainstream spotlight.

In 1977, NBC aired a one-hour special, The Richard Pryor Special, and its success led the network to offer Pryor his own variety show. Pryor reportedly had misgivings, knowing his signature material pushed the boundaries of television. Censor constraints, coupled with the network's decision to air his show in a prime family viewing time, 8 p.m., led to Pryor's 10-episode commitment to drop to four shows.

Pryor's supporting cast included Robin Williams, Tim Reid, Sandra Bernhard, Marsha Warfield, Edie McClurg, Paul Mooney and John Witherspoon.
