2000: Mary and Rhoda Reunite in an ABC TV Movie
February 7, 2018  | By TV WW  | 1 comment

On this day in 2000, Mary Tyler Moore and Valerie Harper reprised their roles from the '70s sitcom, The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

In the film, newly-widowed Mary Richards-Cronin returns to New York and reunites with old friend (and divorcee) Rhoda Morgenstern-Rousseau. Together they acclimate to being single mothers of college-age daughters (Joie Lenz as Rose Cronin and Marisa Ryan as Meredith Rousseau.) The cast also included Elon Gold and Christine Ebersole.

A nice idea , but they waited too long...there was too much backstory that we missed , made them seem like totally different characters. Moore should have re-invented Mary Richards much earlier ala "Lou Grant" and had several opportunities (a sit-com where she played a very "Mary-type" char magazine writer...a drama where she played an older media exec) I did like the way Harper seems to be channeling Nancy Walker in a "she's become her mother " way...I wanted this to work ..too bad it didn't (really liked the Joan Jett version of the theme song)
