1967: 'The Phil Donahue Show' Launches
November 6, 2017  | By TV WW  | 1 comment

Before Oprah, there was Phil. And it was on this day in 1967 that Phil Donahue debuted his eponymous talk show in Dayton, Ohio. A little over three years later, The Phil Donahue Show — later simply Donahue — was syndicated nationwide.

Donahue was known for tackling controversial, hot-button topics (His very first guest was atheist activist Madalyn Murray O'Hair.) and helped paved the way for the tabloid-style shows hosted by Maury Povich, Sally Jessy Raphael and Jerry Springer.

The Phil Donahue Show ran for a total of 29 years, and remains the longest countinuously-running syndicated talk show.

The big secret is how Multimedia of Greenville,SC got the syndication rights to distribute Donahue and this rather conservative newspaper firm via its Entertainment division made millions in profits to allow Phil to buy a nice life in Greenwich,Ct. country and find that girl,Marlo Thomas. He also knew how to get an audience involved via the runaround with the mike schtick in later years. Worst mistake? Moving the show to NYC from Chicago.Best take? Some news gal named Oprah learned it all from him.
