BEST BETS FOR WEDNESDAY, MAR. 17, 2010

SCRUBS

ABC, 8 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: And, most likely, the series finale as well. But this last episode of the current order, “Our Thanks,” reminds us, with its very title, to give Our Thanks to a show that, when it was firing on all cylinders, was one of the silliest, yet most enjoyable, sitcoms around.

HUMAN TARGET

Fox, 8 p.m. ET

So many TV shows have tried this formula, to make a small-screen James Bond with the same sense of fun and flair, but it’s harder to do than to attempt. This series pulls it off, and Mark Valley’s portrayal is the key ingredient. Tonight, a killer Chance trained re-enters the picture – and so does, as always, a beautiful woman.

GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET: THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

PBS, 8 p.m. ET

(Check local listings)

Juan Diego Florez stars as Count Almaviva in this version of Rossini’s comic opera, with Joyce DiDinato as Rosina and Peter Mattei as the titular character, Figaro.

AMERICAN IDOL

Fox, 9 p.m. ET

Last night’s Rolling Stones songbook night featured a lot of odd choices and odder arrangements, and even some low-key performances from the usual frontrunners. But a few bright spots emerged, led by Siobhan Magnus and her moody “Paint It Black.” Tonight, the future gets painted black for one of the Top 12, as the field gets cut to the Top 11.

GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933

TCM, 9:45 p.m. ET

This Busby Berkeley musical is one of my favorite films to show in Film History class – because its take on financial hardships, Wall Street tycoons and neglected war veterans seems almost ridiculously topical. And for a musical, this finale, with its soldiers on parade and families on breadlines, has some real teeth.

SOUTH PARK

Comedy Central, 10 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This show always comes out swinging at topical targets. So how’s this? To start the new season, the show goes behind closed doors where Tiger Woods is receiving sex-addiction therapy – and he’s not alone.
