BEST BETS FOR TUESDAY, MAR. 16, 2010

AMERICAN IDOL

Fox, 8 p.m. ET

It’s the Top 12, and the early favorites, to my eyes and ears, are Crystal Bowersox and Michael Lynche, both of whom carry themselves and a tune with equal assurance. Tonight, the men and women compete against each other for the first time in this final stage – and the songbook tonight is The Rolling Stones. Lots of selections – and lots of chances to mess up, too.

12 MONKEYS

AMC, 8 p.m. ET

Terry Gilliam directed this 1995 sci-fi film, which stars Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt – and, after all these years of Lost, may seem less jarring in its time-traveling story lines.

LOST

ABC, 9 p.m. ET

I loved last week’s episode, when Jack stared down the fuse on the ancient dynamite and, at that moment, switched teams to become a man of faith, with belief, at last, in himself. So what happens tonight? No idea. But there’s a definite, and very satisfying, sense of forward momentum.

THE GOOD WIFE

CBS, 10 p.m. ET

In the courtroom, Alicia stages a tough fight – but at home, where she’s juggling her estranged husband’s return as well as a simmering romantic interest at work, she’s less clear of her next move.

FLASHFORWARD

ABC, 10 p.m. ET

This series returns Thursday – and in the very good chance you need a reminder to remember where this show left off (literally where, and when, in this case), ABC is proving a primer summary of the plot thus far. So, yes, it’s a Flashforward flashback.

JUSTIFIED

FX, 10 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Timothy Olyphant, who was so great as Seth Bullock in Deadwood, stars as a more modern lawman in this new FX series. No moustache, but once again, he’s sporting a sizable hat and a volatile attitude. But there’s lots of humor here, courtesy of its Elmore Leonard source material, and it’s lots of fun.
