BEST BETS FOR SUNDAY, FEB. 7, 2010

SUPER BOWL XLIV

CBS, 6:25 p.m. ET

It’s the New Orleans Saints vs. the Inaianapolis Colts. QBs Drew Brees vs. Peyton Manning. Played in Miami, one of the few stadiums in the country not filled with snow right now. And each team with its own compelling story line: the Saints, rising from the flood tides of Katrina, and the Colts, ridden by the reins of multi-year MVP Manning. All that, and the commercials, too.

MODERN FAMILY

ABC, 8, 9, 10 & 10:30 p.m. ET

Four repeat episodes of this comedy are thrown against the Super Bowl tonight. Record them to watch later, and you’ll be glad you did.

PUPPY BOWL VI

Animal Planet, 7 p.m. ET

Hate football? Love dogs? For the sixth straight year, Animal Planet presents two hours of puppies romping on a miniature fake football field – then repeats those two hours immediately, just in case you missed something. If you watch this, there’s a name for your enthusiasm: They call it puppy love.

8 1/2

TCM, 8 p.m. ET

The musical Nine was based on this 1963 Federico Fellini movie, a fantastic film – fantastic in the fantasy sense as well – about a director, played by Marcello Mastroianni as Fellini’s alter ego, fighting a sort of writer’s block while planning and filming his next picture. An Italian classic, and a showcase not only for inventive filmmaking, but for a bevy of truly beautiful women.

DEADWOOD

DirecTV 101 Network, 9 p.m. ET

This is the penultimate episode of this series, repeated in High-Def by DirecTV. And for more than a month now, these weekly installments have ratcheted up the tension to unbelievable levels – and the climactic showdowns are beginning to occur. Not only one of the best Westerns ever made, but one of the best TV dramas.

UNDERCOVER BOSS

CBS, post-Super Bowl ET

I question the credibility of what this new reality series captures (see today’s BIANCULLI’S BLOG), but I don’t question its entertainment value. As a series launched by the post-Super Bowl audience, TV can do a lot worse. And has.
