BEST BETS FOR SUNDAY, JULY 5, 2009

WIMBLEDON MEN'S FINAL

NBC, 9 a.m. ET

Andy Roddick made it to the men’s final, which means he now gets to face Roger Federer in the ultimate match of the men’s tournament for Wimbledon 2009. This may fall under the category of “Be careful what you wish for” – but I’m wishing for another demonstration of skill as good as yesterday’s match between the Williams sisters.

NOVA: "MUSICAL MINDS"

PBS, 7 p.m. ET

(Check local listings)

Oliver Sacks takes you through four case studies of people whose musical abilities, or quirks, are nothing short of amazing. The same can be said of this documentary, which premiered earlier this week. If you missed it then, make sure to catch tonight’s repeat. You’ll be thrilled you did.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

TNT, 8 p.m. ET

It may not be a dollar short, but this 1996 movie is a day late. Watching the alien destruction of Washington landmarks may be less enjoyable in this post-9/11 era, but one part of this action movie continues to delight. Watch, when the entire population of D.C. is fleeing the city, how no one thinks of avoiding a mammoth traffic jam by driving on the inbound lanes.

MR. HULOT'S HOLIDAY

TCM, 8 p.m. ET

Jacques Tati stars in this vintage, but still charming, quiet comedy (very quiet). If you’re familiar with the charms of this 1954 film and its star, I don’t need to say more. If you aren’t, the discovery itself is part of the joy.

DEADWOOD

DirecTV 101 Network, 9 p.m. ET

This David Milch Western, I swear, is even better the second time around. And they’re all swearing, too – about the killer of Wild Bill who got away, the swanky new whorehouse and gaming parlor in town, and the abandoned, disease-ridden poor soul who’s not dead yet. I know what happens, but I’m STILL hooked.

TRUE BLOOD

HBO, 9 p.m. ET

Tonight’s offering is a three-peat. You won’t find any new episodes on this holiday weekend, but you will be able to watch the first three installments of the season, back to back, to get you prepared for next Sunday’s new episode.
