BEST BETS FOR FRIDAY, SEPT. 19, 2008

Starz, 9 p.m. ET There's so much to like about this moody 2007 Coen Brothers film. Who would have known that, when the boys stop going for laughs, they can do tense, enthralling drama just as smoothly? The performances, no matter how much information is withheld about the characters, are intense and oddly charismatic - especially Javier Bardem as the hit man who speaks softly and carries a bigÉ well, watch for yourself. |

BBC America, 9:20 p.m. ET There’s a lot of confusion about which episode of this tabloid biography parody show is being presented tonight. The BBC America website page devoted to the series says Angelina Jolie (pictured, as caricatured) is the subject, the main page of the site promotes Britney Spears, and my TiVo listings say Jude Law. No matter which one pops up, though, there’s one thing of which I’m certain: It’ll make me laugh. |

PBS, 9:30 p.m. ET (Check local listings) Bill Moyers has been so far ahead of this story, on the shifting and precarious American economy, that it’s no wonder he’s presenting a fast-turnaround show tonight keyed to the current economic collapse of key U.S. financial institutions. Will you learn something by watching? You can take that to the bank. |

TCM, 10 p.m. ET No, this isn’t the musical starring Nicole Kidman. It’s the splashy 1952 drama starring Jose Ferrer as Toulouse Lautrec, and featuring, as co-star, Zsa Zsa Gabor. |

Encore, 10:20 p.m. ET If you saw the premiere of Fringe, you saw a scene in which the heroine entered an induced dream state to meld minds with a comatose patient. The same device was used in this 2000 movie, with Jennifer Lopez as the woman who goes dream walking to pursue a mystery. In both cases, the results were visually gorgeous. Vincent D’Onofrio co-stars. |

HBO, 11 p.m. ET Last week’s show was a shrill screamfest – one of the few truly disappointing, out-of-control outings of this series. This week, though, Maher’s panel includes one of his all-time all-star guests: Andrew Sullivan. Even when he reverses his opinion, he’s clear in explaining why. |
