BEST BETS FOR MONDAY, MAY 12, 2008

BONES

Fox, 8 p.m. ET

This Fox series has some good-natured fun with one of its own tonight, in an episode built around the murder of an American Idol-type singer. There’s even a direct link, with former Idol singer Ace Young appearing as the special guest star.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

CBS, 8:30 p.m. ET

Britney Spears is back! Yes, that happened amazingly quickly – but when her first appearance became her first positive media appearance in more than a year, it didn’t take long to schedule a second visit. This time, Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) decides to get even with Ted by wooing Spears’ wide-eyed Abby – which means, most startlingly, a marked change in his wardrobe.

TWO AND A HALF MEN

CBS, 9 p.m. ET

Last week, Charlie almost got married, to a woman who turned out to be a con artist. Will he never learn? Apparently not, because tonight he finds himself strongly attracted to an older woman (older for him, anyway) and her gorgeous, grown daughter.

HOUSE

Fox, 9 p.m. ET

The opening half of this two-part season finale finds House (Hugh Laurie) as a physician hoping to heal thyself: He suffers head trauma in a bus accident, and tries to gauge the seriousness of his own injuries even as the symptoms threaten to incapacitate him.

SAMANTHA WHO?

ABC, 9:30 p.m. ET

The last episode of the season for this comedy, which sparkles whenever Jean Smart is on screen as Sam’s mother, focuses on a celebration of the amnesiac’s “first” birthday. Here’s hoping she gets to enjoy a second. Christina Applegate stars.

MEDIUM

NBC, 10 p.m. ET

The fourth-season finale presents two stories – a ghost story where Allison deals with an allegedly haunted house, and a boss-from-hell story where Allison’s husband is confronted, in a very dangerous sense, by his angry business partner (recurring guest star Kelly Preston).
