BEST BETS FOR TUESDAY, MAY 06, 2008

INDIANA-NORTH CAROLINA PRIMARY COVERAGE

MSNBC, 6 p.m. ET

There are all sorts of places to check out live coverage of tonight’s Democratic primary results from Indiana and North Carolina. CNN has the best tech gimmick (the precinct-isolating touch screen), and HD Net has Dan Rather, still following his newsman’s instincts in a new, less ubiquitous media platform. But for now, my favorite place to go is MSNBC, because of the odd-couple pairing of enthusiastic Chris Matthews and sardonic Keith Olbermann. If these guys roomed together after work, there definitely would be a sitcom here.

AMERICAN IDOL

Fox, 8 p.m. ET

It’s down to the Final Four, and tonight there are no excuses for choosing a bad song: the surviving contestants get to pull from a 500-song list of classic rock and pop songs. Brooke White would have done well this week – but she exited tearfully last week, after a performance of “I’m a Believer” that judge Simon Cowell was right to call a “nightmare.”

TARZAN, THE APE MAN

TCM, 8 p.m. ET

This movie, the first in the series and the one to introduce swimmer Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan and Maureen O’Sullivan as Jane, was made in 1932 – just at the point in cinema history to be a little naughty, and feature some aquatic Jane nudity.

BEAUTY AND THE GEEK

CW, 8 p.m. ET

How low will this show go to plumb the depths of reality TV? Tonight, it actually goes plumbing – by demanding that the remaining beauties unclog some toilets and bathtubs. So far, this series has managed to be sweet rather than snarky – but tonight’s task may change that delicate balance.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: GEORGE H.W. BUSH

PBS, 9 p.m. ET

(Check local listings)

Part two of this four-hour biography airs tonight, and isn’t the first Frontline this season to recount the events leading to President Bush’s launching of the Gulf War – but this is the first Gulf War, and a different President Bush.

LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT

NBC, 10 p.m. ET

Stephen Collins guest stars tonight, playing a man caught in a romantic triangle – with his own son being the other man.
