BEST BETS FOR SUNDAY, APRIL 20, 2008

JOHN ADAMS

HBO, 1, 9 p.m. ET

The final episode of this miniseries is shown today – and so are all the others. Beginning at 1 p.m. ET, HBO is repeating all six episodes of the historical series that have been televised to date. Then, in its regular 9 p.m. ET slot, John Adams concludes, with a very old John Adams (Paul Giamatti) assessing his life and legacy, and his increasingly tenuous relationship with his loved ones. If you’ve missed this ambitious production thus far, set your recorder or get comfortable, and grab the whole thing at once.

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS: WGN AND THE CHICAGO CUBS

WGN, 7 p.m. ET

Sixty years of TV baseball coverage in Chicago began in 1948, when postwar television was in its infancy. This two-hour special traces and celebrates that history, the vast majority of which was covered by announcer Harry Caray. Fans of the Cubs, and fans of broadcast history, will find equal reasons to rejoice here.

OPRAH'S BIG GIVE

ABC, 8 p.m. ET

I’m not a fan of this show at all, but watching Oprah Winfrey wield her clout with such strong-arm tactics is nothing if not instructive. And tonight, to build up viewership for the finale, whom does she enlist to help distribute the money and the moral lessons? Jennifer Aniston.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES

ABC, 9 p.m. ET

Bree has something to smile about in tonight’s episode, and Lynette has even more: Jason Gedrick returns as the hunky ex-con chef from last season.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS

ABC, 10 p.m. ET

After a long hiatus, this series returns with changes and/or surprises for just about every character, up to and including Sally Field’s matriarchal character. Oh, and Rob Lowe is back, too – if not with a vengeance, then at least with a mission.

JOHN OLIVER -- TERRIFYING TIMES

Comedy Central, 10 p.m. ET

The cheeky Daily Show correspondent – okay, so they’re all cheeky, by dint of their job description – headlines his first stand-up comedy special. Beware: He’s been known to tell a very disturbingly memorable story about his days as a would-be high school athlete.
