BEST BETS FOR APRIL 07, 2008

THE FLY

More Max , 7:20 p.m. ET

There are two bold horror movies on TV tonight, one remake and one original. The remake is this 1986 David Cronenberg version of the 1958 sci-fi movie, which starred David Hedison as the poor guy who shrank to fly size and screamed “Help me!” in a high-pitched buzzy voice. Cronenberg’s take is much darker, and taken more seriously, and stars Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, then an item.

KING KONG

TCM, 8 p.m. ET

This is the original – the 1933 with Fay Wray and lots of other special effects. The special effects work in the jungle is amazing, given the time, and the climax in New York City inspires the kind of make-believe magic that movies are all about. Or should be.

NCAA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

CBS, 9 p.m. ET

Kansas and Memphis, the two top-ranked teams that made it all the way to the finals, battle tonight for the championship. Both teams are relentlessly speedy, so don’t expect much of a break between the full-court fast breaks. And expect more dunking than at a Salem witch hunt.

MEDIUM

NBC, 10 p.m. ET

This ought to be fun: Rosanna Arquette, who already has given us one of the steamiest sex scenes in TV history as a guest star on Showtime’s The L Word, guest stars here as a femme fatale with a string of good-looking male bodies in her wake. Arquette is playing, for the first time, opposite her real-life sister Patricia, whose Allison, in this show, has visions of the black widow’s antics. I’ll bet they’re visions well worth watching, too.

EXTRAS: EXTRA SPECIAL SERIES FINALE

HBO, 10:15 p.m. ET

Even if you never saw a frame of the two seasons of Extras, the HBO series starring Ricky Gervais and Ashley Jensen, you’ll be up to speed here in no time, and you’ll be glad you watched this wickedly funny, ultimately touching finale. Jensen, since seen on ABC’s Ugly Betty, has yet to be used there as effectively as Gervais, as both writer and co-star, employs her here.

LOST HIGHWAY

IFC, 10:45 p.m. ET

It’s too bad that this 1997 David Lynch film begins at 10:45 instead of 11 p.m., because it co-stars Patricia Arquette, who’s starring in the 10 p.m. hour in a new episode of NBC’s Medium. But record this, or that, and enjoy both, because this is one of the creepiest things Lynch ever filmed, and that’s saying something. Arquette plays at least two roles that I can figure out – maybe more – and Robert Blake plays a role here that has to be seen to be disbelieved. Wow.
