BEST BETS FOR DECEMBER 18, 2007

Raisin in the Sun

A RAISIN IN THE SUN

TCM, 8 p.m. ET

Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee star in this intimate 1961 family drama, adapted by Lorraine Hansberry from her own play. Watch, too, for the supporting cast, which includes a fairly young Louis Gossett, Jr.

Ralph Nadar

INDEPENDENT LENS: "AN UNREASONABLE MAN"

PBS, 9 p.m. ET
(Check local listings)

The title refers to its subject, activist and presidential candidate Ralph Nader - and in context, calling him An Unreasonable Man is not an insult. It comes from the quote by George Bernard Shaw, who said: "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man." This profile covers his entire history, from Unsafe at Any Speed to siphoning crucial votes in the 2004 election.

Nip/Tuck

NIP/TUCK

FX, 10 p.m. ET

Last week, Kimber (Kelly Carlson), after bartering for her latest round of cosmetic surgery, went back into the arms of her former porn film producer - and took the baby with her. Somehow, the Nip/Tuck folks think that picking up the story line from there, tonight, is a good way to mount a Christmas episode. I love this show, but I don't see the connection - unless it's clear that Kimber, even more so after her meth addiction phase, is a ho, ho, ho.

William Shatner

BOSTON LEGAL

ABC, 10 p.m. ET

Here's another show presenting a questionable holiday episode - though seeing William Shatner's Denny Crane wearing antlers isn't nearly as outrageous, or out of place, as some of the other things he's worn on this show. For Halloween, do you remember his flamingo suit? Lennon sister? Dick Cheney?

Saving Grace

SAVING GRACE

TNT, 10 p.m. ET

This series isn't as good as the leading performance by Holly Hunter - but this is the season finale, and Grace's sister (Laura San Giacamo) may be in danger, even with an angel hovering nearby.

Craig Ferguson

LATE LATE SHOW WITH CRAIG FERGUSON

CBS, 12:35 a.m. ET

All the late-night shows are still in reruns for now, even though negotiations are afoot, and proceeding quickly, that will change that, especially for David Letterman's Worldwide Pants productions, which include his own Late Show and Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show. Meanwhile, this week, Letteman is repeating installments featuring some of his favorite female guests - and Ferguson, on his show, is devoting this week of reruns to episodes from previous years of holiday programs, with each one featuring at least one Christmas carol.
