BEST BETS FOR DECEMBER 15, 2007

Scene from SNL

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE CHRISTMAS

NBC, 8 p.m. ET

NBC just showed this five-year-old repeat two days ago, but shuffled its Saturday schedule to show it again. But there's no reason to complain, because these skits, covering the best SNL holiday skits from 1975 to 1992, certainly hold up well to repeated viewing... including, of course, Alec Baldwin's secret recipe for his Christmastime "Schweddy balls."

Errol Flynn

THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD

TCM, 8 p.m. ET

If you're at all hazy on the definition of a true swashbuckler, or where that film genre was spawned, here's a good place to stop the search. Errol Flynn stars as the well-intentioned thieving archer in this 1938 action film, which also stars Basil Rathbone, Olivia de Havilland and Claude Rains.

Dreamgirls

DREAMGIRLS

HBO, 8 p.m. ET

Jennifer Hudson didn't win American Idol, but she did win the key role in this 2006 version of the hit Broadway musical. Pay attention to her, and also to Eddie Murphy and, in an intentionally subdued role, Beyoncé Knowles.

X2: X-MEN UNITED

FX, 8 p.m. ET

As superhero movies go, X-Men was quite good, and faithful to the spirit of its original comic-book source material. This sequel, made in 2003, was just as pleasant a surprise, and finds ways to give lots of its actors some moments to shine. Even the minor characters, such as Anna Paquin's Rogue, Alan Cummings' Nightcrawler and Rebecca Romijn's Mystique, make their mark, and make you wish they had more screen time.

Frigbht Night

FRIGHT NIGHT

The Movie Channel, 9 p.m. ET

This comic horror film, in the same basic category as An American Werewolf in London, is generally overlooked, but it's actually funny when it wants to be, scary when it tries to be, and fun throughout. Roddy McDowall plays an over-the-hill TV horror host, and William Ragsdale plays the teen who enlists his help to subdue a neighbor (Chris Sarandon) the kid suspects is a vampire. Playing the female lead - a young woman who, at one point, falls under the neighbor's spell - is Amanda Bearse, who later played a neighbor herself, on Married... with Children.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: THE BEST OF CHRIS FARLEY

NBC, 9:30 p.m. ET

Another Saturday night Saturday Night rerun compilation... and another one that's entertaining. Chris Farley's biggest hits, and biggest skits, are on view here, including his "van by the river" rant that cracks up buddy David Spade, and his Chippendale's dance audition that steals the show from guest host Patrick Swayze.
