Simone Strasser is the sort of admirable female character we’ve met in dozens of movies and TV shows over the years...

We all know television’s shopping cart is overflowing with guilty pleasures, so don’t think twice about throwing ABC’s summer soap Grand Hotel into the basket...

A showy command performance by Kevin Bacon won’t be taking City on a Hill to new heights. It’s enough, however, to give Showtime another Ray Donovan in terms of watchable, serviceable, jut-jawed crime hours...

I apologize for not listing, in Best Bets, the previous game featuring the U.S. women’s soccer team at this year’s World Cup. What can I say? I dropped the ball – and I shouldn’t have been holding it in the first place, because I’m no goalie. In that first match, the U.S. squad beat Thailand like it was a scrimmage, winning by an absurdly dominant 13-0. Some say the Americans piled on; others say not to keep playing, and celebrating, would have insulted the other te

SERIES PREMIERE: Well, it’s the series premiere on CBS, anyway. This series, an excellent spinoff of the also excellent CBS series The Good Wife, began not on the CBS broadcast network, but on its streaming sister site CBS All Access, which also offers new iterations of Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. But you have to pay for them – while, if you wait long enough, apparently, you might get them for free via CBS, as with tonight’s first two episodes of Season 1 of The Good Fight

Season 2 of Big Little Lies continues, with Celeste (Nicole Kidman) trying to maintain and strengthen her relationship with her sons after the death of their father – but with his visiting mother, played by Meryl Streep, upsetting that family dynamic in several different ways.

SERIES PREMIERE: Kevin Bacon stars in this new Showtime crime series, which numbers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon among its executive producers, and claims quality TV pioneer Tom Fontana as its showrunner. For my full review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, visit the Fresh Air website. And for reviews here on TVWW, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes and David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

Because every week he’s on TV, I’m recommending him. Neither he nor his show has let me down yet… which is a lot more than I can say about the current events he summarizes.
