SERIES PREMIERE: Emma Stone and Jonah Hill star in this new Netflix series, which is based – very, very loosely – on a Norwegian comedy series about an institutionalized man with difficulties separating reality from fantasy. This new version is such a new approach that it’s largely a drama, about two people (played by Stone and Hill) who volunteer for a futuristic pharma study that probes their memories and dreams. Sally Field is wildly entertaining in a supporting role, and th

Netflix’s popular Stranger Things series borrows a lot – an awful lot – from the 1985 movie The Goonies. If you haven’t seen it, or haven’t seen it in a while, tune in and see the similarities for yourself. Starting with boys on bikes…

SERIES PREMIERE: This Sundance Now streaming service drama series import, shown on TV in Australia earlier this year, is about a police sergeant on the hunt for a recently resurfaced serial armed robber and murderer. What makes it noteworthy is not only that the sergeant is a woman, but that she’s played by the wonderful actress Rachel Griffiths, who brought such depth to her complex character on Six Feet Under.

Last week, repeated a quartet of episode of this serialized comedy series – but out of sequence, which absolutely worked against the comedic flow. If you survived that, or avoided it, tonight’s double feature of runs at least brings viewers up to date: Tonight’s episodes are the last two installments of Season 2. And Season 3, bringing back one of broadcast TV’s very best series right now, is just around the corner. Ted Danson stars.

Just as NBC is repeating the season finale of The Good Place to set up viewers for next week’s season premiere, Fox is doing that here by showing the Season 1 finale of Gifted, a sci-fi series that is quite a few notches above the genre’s norm.

This month-long Thursday tribute continues tonight, and starts with some very commendable and influential films starring African-Americans. At 8 p.m. ET, TCM presents 1974’s Claudine, a quiet romantic drama starring Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones. And at 10 p.m. ET, there’s 1976’s Sparkle, a drama with music about sisters who become a successful female singing group. Irene Cara has the title role – and a few years later, would demonstrate her singing ang acting tale
