SERIES PREMIERE: Bringing back Roseanne in the Trump era, with all the original cast members, is a safe move for ABC. And it is fun, no question, to see some of the old actors and characters, and even the old Conner home and furniture, again. This sitcom began in 1988 and shot immediately to the number two spot in television, right behind The Cosby Show, its emotional and financial opposite. This new version pits Roseanne in the Archie Bunker role from All in the Family, the conservative ruler o

This season, The Voice already has gone head to head with one ABC powerhouse, that network’s revival of American Idol – and won. Now ABC is throwing its biggest caliber cannon at it, the new reboot of Roseanne. And I suspect The Voice, while continuing to roll out its entertaining and emotional Battle Rounds, will win this battle as well.

DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE: Part 2 of 2. Judd Apatow’s surprisingly, commendably deep dive into the life, career, legacy and philosophy (yes, philosophy) of comic Garry Shandling concludes tonight. It starts with Shandling’s magnum opus, the brilliant and endlessly influential The Larry Sanders Show, and concludes, a few hours later, with footage of Apatow and Kevin Nealon killing it at Shandling’s memorial service. Do not miss this. Then, quickly, seek out and binge as much of Larry

The plots and characters in these opening episodes of Rise, a new Jason Katims drama series revolving around high school life, are a little too pat and predictable thus far. But the idea of doing a Friday Night Lights kind of series, with a musical theater program replacing football, has lots of promise, even with Glee already exploring that territory. Watching high schoolers sing “Shine” at last Saturday’s March for Our Lives rally tells you all you need to know about the pass

Last week, during the first two editions of the Battle Rounds, I was charmed by the beauty of some of the arrangements and performances of the vocal duets – and stunned when one of the members of said duet was sent home rather than stolen by another judge. That’s what you want out of this part of the show, or at least what the producers want, and I continue to be impressed by this show’s talent pool and overall positive emotional aura. Tonight, the third installment of Battle R

DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE: Part 1 of 2. This two-part, five-hour documentary profile of comedian Garry Shandling comes from filmmaker Judd Apatow, one of the many, many people Shandling befriended and mentored over his long, pioneering career in show business. This biographical study, dipping into Shandling’s private diaries and home movies, captures it all, from the tragic loss of his brother in early childhood to his pushing-the-envelope cable TV work on Showtime’s It’s Garry Shan

Tonight’s new episode is called “Goon Struck” – and though it sounds like a play on a Cher movie, it’s actually about the murder of a hockey player, which sends Liv (Rose McIver) to investigate, and ingest the brains and memories and attitudes of, the corpse on ice.

SERIES PREMIERE: This new AMC drama, based on the historically inspired novel by Dan Simmons, tells the story of two ill-fated sea voyages during the 19th century, by the H.M.S. ships Erebus and Terror.  About two decades before America’s Civil War, they became trapped in the North Atlantic ice, working their way through the still-unknown lengths of the Northwest Passage. Simmons injects what may be a supernatural element, but the natural horrors are frightening enough. Ciaran Hinds a
