Last week’s season premiere will prove unforgettable because of unbilled guest star Matt Damon’s forceful appearance as Brett Kavanaugh. Tonight’s episode, even before it begins, is memorable also, because its guest host is Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina – the first female Asian to host SNL since Charlie’s Angels star Lucy Liu appeared in 2000. Musical guest: Travis Scott.

SEASON PREMIERE: This is Season 3 of Amazon’s ambitious adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel, and this year, the show’s alternative history drama is all over the map. Literally. Japan has achieved parity with Germany, the other victor in this reality-warping outcome to WWII, by developing a more powerful bomb. The Nazis have used firing squads, torture and propaganda to further their message and aims in this dour season opener – and in the program, a solo child’s voice

There’s quite a crew for tonight’s show, which arrives after quite a week in Washington. Doris Kearns Goodwin provides some long-range historical perspective, former Florida Rep. David Jolly provides some insider insights, journalist Soledad O’Brien and commentator Andrew Sullivan weigh in on the week’s events – and Jeff Bridges gets us all to chill a little. Which we need, sorely…

SEASON PREMIERE: Graham Norton is back – and to start his new season, he’s got not only the new star of Doctor Who (Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor, who bows Sunday on BBC America and worldwide), but the two stars of the newest incarnation of A Star Is Born: Bradley Cooper and. Lady Gaga. Oh, and Ryan Gosling. Oh, and Rod Stewart…

SHORT SUBJECT PREMIERE: First CBS launched the latest iteration of the 50-year-old Star Trek franchise, a year ago, by presenting its premiere episode of Star Trek: Discovery on the broadcast network before relegating all remaining episodes of the series on its pay-to-watch streaming site, CBS All Access. Now it’s doubling down on that “you get what you pay for” approach, offering even more new Star Trek adventures solely to its streaming site subscribers. Star Trek: Short Trek

For this new, end-of-the-line season of The Big Bang Theory, my favorite plot thread so far is the blossoming flirtation between comic-store owner Stuart (Kevin Sussman) and his enamored, equally geeky employee Denise (Lauren Lapkus). The male-female interactions on this series have always been its sweet spot, and this new variation on the very familiar theme is proving to be no exception.

Last week’s Season 3 premiere was a clever, charming hour of comedy, and one that allowed star Ted Danson to play five roles – including (Cheers!) a bartender – while once again hitting reset on this show’s premise, plots and characters. This sitcom is so wildly unpredictable, and so novel in its approach, that it’s evolved into one of the best comedies on broadcast TV right now. Wait, that’s not enough praise. Make that: one of the best shows on broadcast TV
