SERIES REVIVAL: MTV Unplugged began in 1989, defiantly presenting acoustic sets by often electrified performers and band. In those earliest years, some of the best Unplugged sessions were by Elton John, Sting, R.E.M., Paul McCartney, and Nirvana. It was one of the network’s best and most impressive franchises – so, of course, it’s been dormant for a while. But tonight it returns, with an all-acoustic set by Shawn Mendes.

Werner Herzog, as a filmmaker of both dramas and documentaries, is a man whose dedication to his vision borders on the extreme. Then, often, it crosses that border entirely, but always with astounding results. Tonight, TCM devotes the night to films by or about Herzog, starting with one of his amazing masterpieces, 1982’s Fitzcarraldo. Klaus Kinski stars as a man with the dream – the rather insane dream – of bringing opera, and an opera house, to the Brazilian jungle.

This film isn’t by Werner Herzog – it’s about him. It’s a behind-the-scenes documentary, by Les Blank, of Herzog's efforts to film his 1982 epic Fitzcarraldo, in which Herzog’s problems in making the film proved no less daunting than the efforts of his film’s subject to drag a giant river boat across a rain forest mountain. When Herzog started Fitzcarraldo, the original stars were Jason Robards and Mick Jagger. This documentary shows footage of them at work &n

Harry Treadaway (pictured) and Brendan Gleeson have proven to be very well-matched adversaries in this Stephen King drama. Treadaway is a killer with several twisted streaks, and Gleeson is the retired detective still haunted by the killer’s previous murder spree. And slowly but surely, Mr. Mercedes has proven itself one of the best TV shows of the later summer, heading into fall – and its momentum seems destined to continue.
