Episode 5. This series, for example, hasn’t proven itself either way as yet. After four hours, I still don’t have a grasp, or a firm opinion of, this revisitation of the Twin Peaks songbook. There are individual scenes that work, but there are others that are just… there. Tonight, perhaps, the plot lines will advance, and the character of Dale Cooper will begin acting like – well, like the character of Dale Cooper, rather than either a longer-haired Michael Madsen or an

SERIES PREMIERE: This new series is a missed opportunity – a TV series, based on  a nonfiction book about the burgeoning standup comedy scene of the 1970s, rewritten and whitewashed as a fictional work featuring mostly composite characters. The major reason to watch also is the major reason this series should have played it straight, and fact-based: Melissa Leo is a marvel as Goldie, the tough-talking owner of an L.A. comedy club that serves as home base for a parade of aspiring young

While much of the criticism of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return focuses on its non-sequiturs, time shifts, and general incomprehensibility, it’s probably wise to remember that it was always, sort of, this way...

SPECIAL: This is the easiest, and most obvious, TV recommendation of the night. Fifty years (and a day or two) after The Beatles released the groundbreaking 1967 concept album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, PBS presents a new special, co-produced by Apple Corps Ltd. With the full support of the Beatles estate. Directed by Francis Hanly and hosted by Howard Goodall, this special uses audio outtakes from the Sgt. Pepper sessions to help deconstruct and reconstruct the making of one o

This 2016 movie, sort of a cross between The X-Men and a Dickensian boarding house, is a Tim Burton film that almost got unnoticed as a Tim Burton film, but it’s clearly got his take on it – and, like Barry Sonnenfeld with The Addams Family and A Series of Unfortunate Events, benefits greatly from his visual playfulness. Eva Green, so great in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful (and also prominent in Burton’s own, less impressive Dark Shadows remake), stars as the title character.

In tonight’s episode, in the sequences in the past now set in 1849, young Eli must trust an unlikely ally in order to survive his latest set of ordeals. Meanwhile, his older counterpart, back in 1915, has problems, and allies and adversaries, of his own.

Tonight’s new episode, “The Lie of the Land” (lie, not lay – get it?), concludes this unofficial trilogy story line about the menacing alien monks. In the first episode, the end of the Earth turned out to be an artificial test-run simulation before the monks’ actual invasion. In the second episode, the blinded Doctor (Peter Capaldi) regained his sight, but potentially at the loss of Earth for real. But tonight, the Doctor and his companions have one last chance to s
