Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed this 2012 period film, which stars Jamie Foxx as a former slave who becomes the partner of a German bounty hunter roaming the deep South during the plantation era. The bounty hunter is played by Christoph Waltz, in a standout role – but also watch for Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington and that wonderful Justified star, Walton Goggins.

This 1953 comedy is about three women who set out to marry into wealth, and it’s made richer by the casting of its three (very) leading ladies: Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe.

This 1975 movie is noteworthy for several things. Long before Mad Max, it presented a dystopian post-apocalyptic view of the future. Long before Miami Vice, it has Don Johnson in a starring role, as a resourceful loner whose secret weapon is his traveling companion, a brilliant canine with mental telepathy. But my favorite aspect of this film is that it’s based on a story by Harlan Ellison, a visionary writer who’s smarter than any telepathic canine.

Look how times have changed – or how they haven’t. In 1969, Sam Peckinpah directed this gritty Western, which attracted all sorts of heat, and acclaim, for its slow-motion scenes of gunplay and violence. William Holden, Ernest Borgnine and Robert Ryan star.

Maybe it’s that this improv series arrives on a Friday, when I’m all worn out – but there’s something about this show’s easy, breezy fun that makes it the perfect antidote to a tough work week. And this week, among the guest stars playing along: Tara Lipinski.

This 1950 musical features one of the stock plot lines of the genre: hey, kids, let’s put on a show. And this time, the kids putting on the show include two of the very best: Judy Garland and Gene Kelly.

Quite a show: Not only is former Real Time correspondent Matt Taibbi one of the guests, along with Rob Lowe, but so are Masha Alekkina, Nadya Tolokonnikova (pictured) and Petya Verzilov – much, much better known as the Russian activist group known as Pussy Riot.
