SEASON PREMIERE: Nucky (Steve Buscemi) is back. And if he was not exactly in a position of power last season, this time he makes some moves in that direction. He’s counseling peace, but at a price, and the price is that a negotiated cease fire among Atlantic City’s warring factions would cause his own star to rise again.

We’re getting very near the end of Dexter, which means that his current pursuit of the Brain Surgeon may be the last time he hunts down a serial-killer quarry. Meanwhile, what does the end of this series mean for Dexter’s sister Deb, and for his current fatal-attractive squeeze, Hannah? Only time will tell, but it’s almost time.

After the best episode in this series’ two-season history, The Newsroom returns, after a holiday week off, to pick up where it left off – with Jeff Daniels’ Will McAvoy and his staff trying to reclaim the trust and reputation they enjoyed before faltering on-air. Jane Fonda, playing the news channel’s owner, ended that episode by screaming, “Get it back!” And tonight, they start to do just that, as Election Night 2012 arrives. For my review of the most recent

In the most recent episode, Jon Voight as Ray’s father, and James Woods as the man Ray hired to kill Ray’s father, each took a life, suddenly and unexpectedly. And tonight, they end up in the same place, at the same time. Whatever happens, I’m betting on Ray’s dad.

Mr. Peabody, the erudite dog in the Bullwinkle cartoons, had his WABAC (“way back”) machine for visiting the past. George Foster Peabody, no relation, has his own version... A very large time capsule...

Apparently, the Miley Cyrus performance at the recent  MTV Video Music Awards has travelled far – reaching the 23rd century and the Starship Enterprise... it seems to have had a similar effect on Captain Kirk and the crew as it did on the rest of us...

This 2012 Best Picture Oscar-winner, directed by and starring Ben Affleck, is a well-made hrill ride from start to finish – even though the finish departs wildly from the reality of the fascinating true-life story on which it’s based. But the story itself, about a wildly improbable plan to return a half-dozen American embassy employees to safety after the takeover of the American embassy in Iran in 1979, needs no embellishment. And the performances here are wonderful – not only

James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor sizzle in this 1956 drama – sometimes together, sometimes separately. And this sprawling tale of Texans wrangling cattle and oil, based on the Edna Ferber novel, was Dean’s last film, and a strong hint of things that might have been.

Starz timed this series telecast quite cannily, positioning it on both a night, and at a time of year, when almost nothing else fresh is on, in terms of TV fare. So whether this female-centered take on British history is really that involving, it benefits from being, as NBC executive Paul Klein once coined back in the 1970s, a prime example of “L.O.P. – Least Objectionable Programming.”
